A half hour later, they hid behind a fallen tree watching the ramshackle cabin to see who lived there. The tree had been down for years and was covered in slimy moss that felt creepy to Cloe’s touch. “Cole, I hate this slimy crap and my butt is soaked from sitting on the ground.”

Cole looked in his backpack, pulled out a thermal space blanket, and placed it on the ground by the log. “Here, place your butt on the blanket.”

Cloe smiled in the twilight at Cole. “You haven’t paid much attention to my butt or the rest of me lately. Are you sure you don’t have another woman?”

“Shush Cloe. They could hear us if you speak too loud. I’ve told you a dozen times that I don’t have another woman. I just have my smart assed girlfriend who picks on me all the time.”

Cole swatted her on the butt and pointed at the door, which opened. They both saw an old man and woman come outside and walk to the dog pen.

“Marge, I think this new dog will work out real good. He works well with Rufus and Queenie. They treed that cat and held her there until I got a shot off. I’ll finish cutting that cat up in the morning, and we’ll have 80 pounds of meat and a good hide to trade to those city folks down in Medford.”

The old woman replied, “I almost feel sorry for those assholes down there. We been living in the woods for forty years without electricity, cell phones or computers. They fell apart because they couldn’t talk on cell phones. That lab was a housedog. Bring him in the house to keep Queenie and me company.”
